Passive job seekers are individuals not currently looking for a new position. The trick when you’re look for candidates with specific skills is to convince them maybe they really do need a change. So how can you convert passive job seekers into active job seekers? Here are a few ideas to get started.

  • Participate on LinkedIn. LinkedIn gives everyone an opportunity to showcase their skills and a route to connect with individuals on a professional basis. Plenty of people are looking for jobs, but others like to keep their profile up to date just to maintain a professional image. They may not be looking, but if you contact them at the right time, they could change their minds.  
  • Check out the competition. When you need to seek out a professional with very specific skills, one tried-and-true method is to look to your competitors. This is another way you can utilize LinkedIn to find candidates who may not be seeking new opportunities. Or you can become active in the industry events and networks.
  • Go to networking events. Face-to-face communication is one of the best ways to get someone interested in what you have to offer. At networking events, even if someone isn’t looking, they may have a spark of interest based on what you’re saying. Consider industry events in your area to find great passive job seekers.  
  • Be active on social media. Social media also has a way of connecting people when they least expect it. Stay active on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and reach out to people who might be a good fit for your organization. Make them interested in what you have to offer, and they may turn from passive to active.  
  • Review blogs. You can also find passive candidates through blogs. People who are experts in their fields will often create blogs to showcase their skills and experience. They want to be seen as a subject-matter expert. Appeal to this by connecting with them and showing them how you would appreciate your talent in your company.
